Bangor, Maine, boasts a rich and fascinating history. In the mid-1830s, Bangor earned the title of "Lumber Capital of the World," with over 300 sawmills lining the Penobscot River. Lumberjacks harvested the northern Maine woods, sending logs down the river to Bangor. The city also played a role in early American naval history. During a conflict near Winterport, about 15 miles from Bangor, British forces targeted American ships, prompting 20 vessels to seek refuge at the mouth of the Kenduskeag Stream in Bangor. Years later, in 1814, during the War of 1812, British troops advanced through Hampden, bordering Bangor to the south after the Battle of Hampden, and forced Bangor's selectmen to surrender unconditionally. Once again, the Americans retreated to Bangor.
