Conway boasts a rich history, originally marked out as Kingston by 1732. The area witnessed action during the American Revolutionary War, with engagements at Bear Bluff and Socastee. In 1801, the county was renamed Horry District. The village of Kingston became Conwayborough, honoring General Robert Conway. The name was shortened to Conway in 1883.
