Before English colonists arrived, the Suncook people, whose name translates to 'to the rocks,' lived along the Suncook River in what is now Gilmanton Iron Works. While they largely retreated before English settlement, the French & Indian Wars delayed the town's full establishment by 34 years. Even during this pause, Gilmanton's founding fathers managed town business from their coastal settlements where violent skirmishes were common. Gilmanton's charter was signed on May 20th, 1727, by Colonial Governor John Wentworth. By 1775, the population was 775. Seven Gilmanton men died during the Revolutionary War. By 1800, the population grew to 3,752. In 1811, Gunstock Parish (now Gilford and part of Laconia) seceded from Gilmanton due to the distance to town meetings. By 1900, the population decreased to 1,100.
