Shaftsbury's history is deeply rooted in the early days of Vermont. You might say that Benning Wentworth, Governor of New Hampshire, was the father of the Town of Shaftsbury. When a New York court challenged his rights to lands allegedly along West Mountain Road, Shaftsbury, he organized the 'Green Mountain Boys,' an unofficial militia, to fight for their rights against their New York neighbors, not against the Crown. This included conflicts with settlers like John Monro, living in Shaftsbury Hollow, who claimed lands under a New York Grant.
